Ofsted praises school and its well-behaved pupils

A CONSISTENT quality of provision at St Michael's Church of England Primary School, Stoke Gifford, has maintained a safe, happy environment and above average attainment.

Inspectors from Ofsted said pupils made good progress because they were keen to learn and were taught well in a school with strong leadership and management.

Rating it as good, they said positive attitudes to school life generally and to learning in particular contributed strongly to progress made in class and to pupils' overall achievement.

But they said they could not rate it any higher because not enough teaching was of outstanding quality.

Lead inspector John Carnaghan said children made a good start to their education in the early years foundation stage and went on to make good progress across Years 1-6.

He said: "Teachers plan carefully so that pupils are fully challenged. Lessons are orderly because pupils are both naturally co-operative and well managed. Marking and the use of targets are excellent so pupils fully understand the next steps in their learning.

"Behaviour is good and this makes a significant contribution to the calm atmosphere around the school."

Mr Carnaghan said head teacher Mark Freeman worked well with his leadership and management team and the governing body, with all staff having a commitment to improvement. The school also had a well-balanced, relevant curriculum.

He said attainment in maths had been a slight concern in previous years but a focus on developing the teaching of the subject has led to improvements so it was now consistent with that in English.

Mr Carnaghan said: "A very small number of pupils require and receive firm guidance to conform to the school's high expectations. However, instances of poor behaviour are declining.

"The school is a very harmonious community where, typically, pupils are courteous, respectful and considerate."
