UCONN WOMEN: Huskies celebrate west coast swing

EUGENE, Ore. >> In many ways the New Year?s Eve matinee gave the top-ranked UConn women?s basketball some extra play time before things start to get serious. Riding a suffocating defensive effort to a stunningly-routine win over previously top-ranked Stanford on Saturday, the Huskies were in no danger of suffering their first loss to an injury-ravaged Oregon team. Add in the stress-free environment with the quick tempo the Ducks play with under head coach Paul Westhead and the Huskies were able to run up and down the court seemingly at will. The sold-out nationally-televised showdown between the two dominant forces in the world of Big East women?s basketball will be followed by road games against perennially rugged Georgetown and Marquette squads. Three starters have graduated including first-round WNBA picks Natalie Novosel and Devereaux Peters. Notre Dame has hit triple digits in points in three of its last six games including scoring a season high 128 points against St. Francis (Pa.) on Monday, a scoring outburst made all the more impressive considering that Diggins only attempted four shots.
